What Is Dual N-Back?
Dual n-back is a continuous matching task. Every trial gives you two streams of information: a location in a grid and a short sound. Your job is to decide whether either one matches what appeared a fixed number of trials earlier.
The word dual means you track both streams at once. The value of N controls how far back you compare. This trainer also offers single-channel visual and auditory modes when you want to learn one response at a time.
How to Play
- Choose a mode and level. Dual and 1-back are the defaults. Keep Auto Adjust on if you want the next level chosen from your score.
- Complete the guided practice. It demonstrates a position match, a sound match, and both together without saving a result.
- Respond during the trial window. Use A for Position Match and L for Sound Match, or use the large on-screen buttons. The grid itself is not a response control.
- Review the round. You will see balanced accuracy, response counts, and a plain-language reason for the next-level decision.
How Scoring Works
Each scored channel contains target and non-target trials. A correct response to a target is a hit. Missing a target is a miss. Responding to a non-target is a false alarm, while correctly waiting is a correct rejection.
This balance means that never pressing a button cannot produce a deceptively high result. Scores of 80% or more move up one level when Auto Adjust is on; scores below 50% move down; scores between those thresholds hold.
What 1-Back, 2-Back, and 3-Back Mean
Compare the current signal with the immediately previous trial.
Compare it with the signal two trials earlier, ignoring the one in between.
Compare it with the signal three trials earlier. More intervening trials increase the tracking load.
Does Dual N-Back Improve Working Memory?
Dual n-back gives you repeatable practice on the n-back task and lets you track performance across sessions. Research on transfer to broader cognitive abilities remains mixed, so a higher in-game score should be read as better performance on this task rather than as a general cognitive measurement.
Use the trainer as a focused practice exercise. It should not replace professional advice or a validated assessment used for a specific clinical or educational purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this dual n-back game free?
Yes. The complete trainer, practice, scoring, level adjustment, and local history are available without an account.
How long is one scored round?
A round has N warm-up trials followed by 20 scored trials. Every trial lasts three seconds, so a typical round takes a little over one minute.
Why is my first trial not scored?
The first N trials establish the history needed for comparison. A 2-back round needs two earlier signals before a 2-back match can exist.
Can I play without sound?
Choose Visual mode to train positions only. Mute is a separate control, so muting a Dual or Auditory round does not silently change its scoring mode.
Where are my results stored?
Only in LocalStorage in this browser, newest first, up to 50 scored sessions. Practice and abandoned rounds are not stored.
